Wednesday 9th September 2009 - Lydiard Youth 'B' (H)

Three days after their first game of the season, the "A" Team entertained Lydiard Youth "B" at Ballards Ash. Having won their first game of the season, expectation was high for the Bassetteers.

From the kick off Lydiard went straight on the attack and earned a corner. The ball flew past the front post, two Bassett defenders and some how ended in the back of the Bassett net. Not the start we were looking for!!

Two minutes later Bassett earned themselves a corner. A delightfully floated ball from Callum sailed across the Lydiard box but no one could get a touch. On 4 minutes a ball from Callum found Euan who in turn found Jordan Thompson. Jordan's shot was well saved by the Lydiard keeper. The resulting corner was again delivered by Callum, this time for Zach to head home from 2 yards.

A minute later Bassett won the ball and Euan advanced down the right, his cross was met by the head of Zach and the ball looped over the keeper to make it 2-1 Bassett.

On 7 minutes Lewis took the ball from defence and passed to Zach. Zach turned the defender but his shot was again saved by the Lydiard keeper. The ensuing corner was not cleared by Lydiard and eventually found itself at the feet of Zach, who tucked it away for his first (and probably not his last) hat trick for Bassett!

The next 10 minutes were played out without any clear chances being created. Alanah and Jordan were solid in defence, the midfield played as a unit and Jordan Thompson ran hard in attack. On 18 minutes, Jordan Taylor advanced the ball from defence, passed to Euan, whom forced wide, shot across goal and just wide of the far post.

The first half almost finished on a high as Zach advanced 1-on-1 on goal, but the ball was smothered by some brave keeping from the Lydiard goalie.

Half Time: 3-1

The second half started quite quietly but on 5 minutes Euan picked up the ball in midfield. Bassett found themselves 2-on-1. A diversion run from Zach allowed Euan to turn the last defender and shoot to make it 4-1!

Straight from the kick off, Jordan Taylor won the ball and launched it up field. Harrison read the bounce and passed the ball to Jordan Thompson, who took it away from the Lydiard defender and shot across the keeper to score his first goal for the "A" Team.

Bassett extended their lead 5 minutes later when some excellent passing between Euan and Jordan Thompson allowed Euan to shoot. His shot hit the post but Euan was alert enough to knock the rebound back into the empty net.

Bassett made it 7-1 only seconds after the restart when Jordan Thompson found Callum, his cross being slotted home by Zach.

On 16 minutes Conor was called upon to make his first save of the second half when he came off his line to block a shot at the feet of the Lydiard forward. Two minutes later Bassett were on the attack again as Jordan Thompson went down the right wing, his cross was knocked to Callum by Zach, Callum's shot going narrowly wide.

On 22 minutes Lydiard pulled a goal back as again a near post corner was allowed to go through the two defenders, this time to be knocked in by the Lydiard forward. The last action of the match was a superb one-two between Euan and Jordan Thompson, Euan's shot being well saved by the Lydiard keeper.

Full-time: 7-2

Match Analysis: An excellent display by Bassett. The early shock of sloppy goal conceded was soon overcome and Bassett were soon in control of the game. The defence was solid and played football. Midfield was hard working and creative. The attack was deadly in converting chances.

Player of the Match: Following a long time training with Bassett, this player has now been able to play and has made an excellent impression from the off! Today's POTM award goes to Zach Bunce who scored a hat trick in 7 minutes, followed by a 4th in the second half and made an outstanding contribution to the rest of the game.
