Sunday 7th February 2010 - Shrivenham & Watchfield (A)

Still sitting proudly at the top of the league, Wootton Bassett "A" Team travelled to Shrivenham for their latest fixture.

The game started with both teams playing attacking football but with no clear chances created. The first opening fell to S&W on 7 minutes when a good through ball left the S&W forward in the clear, Conor making a fine save to deny the chance. From the resulting corner, Conor caught the ball and his quick long kick was picked up by Zach who calmly beat the advancing keeper to make it 1-0 Bassett.

S&W drew level 3 minutes later when a long throw into the Bassett box was not cleared and the ball was hit into the net by the S&W forward from 3 yards. S&W almost took the lead a minute later when a corner was again not dealt with by Bassett, but this time Conor managed to dive onto the ball as it bobbled around in front of the goal.

On 14 minutes Alanah made an excellent tackle to dispossess the S&W forward and passed the ball to Euan. Euan passed to Zach who found Tyler. Instant control and a fine shot saw the ball fly into the S&W goal. 2-1 Bassett!

S&W were level again on 18 minutes. A fine individual effort saw the S&W forward, take the ball from midfield, past two defenders and slot it into the corner of the Bassett goal. Bassett almost took the lead again two minutes later when Euan turned on the edge of the S&W box and thundered his shot against the bar.

As half time approached, Euan hit the wood(plastic)work again. A long kick from Conor, fell to him and his shot hit the left hand upright. This time Tyler was on hand to tap the loose ball in from 2 yards.

Half Time: 3-2

In the first minute of the second half S&W drew level again. A long cross into the Bassett area shot forward on the greasy surface surprising Conor. This time the loose ball was scrambled into the Bassett goal by the S&W attacker.

Bassett took the lead for the fourth time on 30 minutes. Beckham advanced the ball to Tyler who turned the defender and coolly beat the keeper from 8 yards for his hatrick! Straight from the kick off S&W almost drew level for the fourth time! A cross from the right was met on the volley but luckily for Bassett the ball flew just wide of the post.

On 33 minutes Jordan broke up another S&W attack with a well timed tackle. He found Euan who then made a great through ball to Tyler, who scored on the run from the edge of the box. Surely S&W couldn't come back from this 2 goal deficit.

To their credit, S&W did come back at Bassett with 3 chances inside two minutes. The first required to consecutive tackles from Alanah to deny the S&W forward the opportunity to shoot. The second saw S&W hit the post. The third required a fine diving save from Conor to keep the ball out of the Bassett net.

As the full time whistle beckoned, a Callum corner fell at the feet of Euan, who slammed the ball home from 5 yards.

Full-time: 6-3
