Sunday 14th February 2010 - ASC Youth (A)

A place in the last four of the North Wilts District Cup was the prize for the winners of today's game between the "A" Team and ASC Youth.

The opening 10 minutes were very tight and although there were a couple of goal mouth scrambles at each end neither team got a shot on target. Alanah and Jordan T were coping well with the lively ASC attack and Conor was only called into action when he had to make a fine diving save to prevent a goal when the ball deflected off Callum.

On 15 minutes ASC came close to breaking the deadlock as they picked up a Bassett goal kick and a smart passing move ended with the final shot hitting the side netting. This chance was quickly followed by a similar opportunity at the other end, when Euan controlled a goal kick and struck a fine shot narrowly wide of the ASC upright.

Bassett took the lead a minute later. Beckham passed the ball down the line for Lewis to control and pass a square ball across the box. The ball was cleared for a corner by the covering defender. As Jordan WT took the corner, Euan peeled off the front post and headed into the back of the ASC goal.

Half Time: 1-0

Bassett almost extended their lead in the first minute of the second half. Euan found Lewis who played a quick one-two with Zach, Lewis's first time shot with his left foot striking the bottom of the post and bouncing back into the keeper's hands.

This chance was followed by 5 minutes of pressure on the Bassett defence. ASC would have been level if it was not for two well timed covering tackles from Jordan T and Beckham. On 27 minutes Bassett broke through the ASC defence following an interchange of passes from Euan and Lewis, Zach's shot across goal being saved by the ASC keeper.

ASC were level on 30 minutes when Bassett failed to clear the ball and it was passed across the box for a smart finish at the near post. Smelling victory, ASC went at Bassett. Firstly a cross-shot was palmed away by Conor. Soon after a fine breakaway move saw the ball go just wide.

Bassett's next chance came as Euan lifted a free kick into the box from the left. The ball was punched clear by the ASC keeper, but unfortunately Jordan WT couldn't gather the ball and get a shot on goal. As full time approached, ASC won a corner. Conor made an excellent reflex save as the shot came through a crowd of players to keep it 1-1 and take the game into extra time.

Full-time: 1-1

Extra time started badly for Bassett as a long range shot in the first minute flew into the top corner. For the rest of the first period of extra time Bassett piled on the pressure but unfortunately couldn't get a goal.

ASC almost extended their lead in the first minute of the second period of extra time but Conor made a good save when 1-on-1 with the ASC attacker.

ASC put the game beyond Bassett when a corner was not cleared and a strong shot from the edge of the area went in at the near post.

Extra-time: 1-3

Match Analysis: Although not at their best, Bassett had a couple of chances early in the second half to put this game beyond ASC. In the end, the best team won and ASC go marching on to the semi-finals.

Player of the Match: Commitment and non-stop energy. Today's POTM award goes to Beckham Hulbert.

Team: Conor Chivers, Lewis Ward, Jordan Taylor, Alanah Edwards, Euan Burke (Capt), Callum Bridges, Zach Bunce, Beckham Hulbert, Jordan Wright-Thompson
