Sunday 14th March 2010 - Old Town United (H)

Top entertained bottom as Wootton Bassett "A" Team hosted Old Town United for their latest league fixture. Although 10 places and 24 points separated these two teams, this was far from a "walkover" for Bassett.

Bassett went straight on the attack when Lewis fed Euan down the right, his cross bounced off Tyler and fell to Zach who shot across goal and narrowly wide. On four minutes Bassett did take the lead when Tyler chased down a ball that looked to be going out for a goal kick. He collected the ball, cut-in and shot past the Old Town keeper to make it 1-0 Bassett.

Two minutes later an Old Town defender tried to clear a long clearance from Jordan T only for the ball to skid of his shin and towards goal. The Old Town keeper making a last ditch save to push the ball round the post. From the resulting corner, Lewis had a shot well saved.

Bassett's next chance followed soon after when Jordan WT went down the left, found himself with plenty of space and shot from 15 yards. The OT keeper pushed the ball away and straight at Euan, the ball bouncing off Euan's knee and just over the bar. That same combination almost extended Bassett's lead 5 minutes later when Jordan WT collected a Jordan T pass. Jordan WT advanced down the left and crossed for Euan to meet on the volley but the ball squirted narrowly wide.

First half chances for Old Town were kept to a minimum as Jordan, Alanah and Lewis defended strongly and gave Old Town no room to shoot.

As half time approached a quick break from Bassett involving both Jordans, Tyler and Euan saw Bassett 2-on-1 against the Old Town keeper but unfortunately no clear chance materialised. Bassett did actually extend their lead before half time as Jordan WT collected a throw from Beckham, turned in the box and shot hard and low into the bottom corner.

Half Time: 2-0

In the second minute of the second half, Bassett almost went three up as Jordan WT shot across goal, the ball hitting a defender and bouncing up and onto the bar. On 29 minutes Old Town had a good chance when they broke through the Bassett defence with some smart passing, the final shot just going wide of Conor's left hand post. The next chance fell to Bassett, as Tyler passed to Euan. Euan travelled down the right but his shot-come-cross, eluded the goal and both Tyler and Jordan WT at the far post. A minute later, a long ball from Lewis found Tyler and he turned and shot into the side netting. After that Bassett extended their lead on 37 minutes as a cross from the right slipped under a defender and Tyler was on hand to make it 3-0.

Bassett went in search of more goal as Lewis won the ball in midfield and travelled towards goal, shooting narrowly wide. A minute later, Callum controlled the ball in midfield, passed through to Zach, whose shot was well saved.

Quite bizarrely Conor was called into action on 42 minutes. A shot from Euan at the other end rebounded off a defender and the ball travelled the length of the pitch and required Conor from stopping an extraordinary goal. Old Town broke away on 20 minutes but Callum, Lewis and Beckham all worked back hard to deny a clear chance and Conor picked up the lose ball. Bassett should have extended their lead when Jordan T went down the right, another cross-shot eluded Zach and Lewis with the goal beckoning.

As the full time whistle approached, Old Town got a well deserved goal as they broke from midfield, 3 quick passes presented the ball to the forward who chipped it over an advancing Conor to make it 3-1.

Full-time: 3-1

Coach's Match Analysis: A hard fought victory against a hard working Old Town United and we played some very good football throughout the match.

On another day we could have scored more goals as several final passes were played too hard across the goal, when a team mate was in a better position to score.

The flow of the game was difficult with 10 players available as the constant changes did disrupt the rhythm of our play, but that is something we'll have to work on for the rest of the season

Player of the Match: In the right place at the right time, today's POTM award goes to Tyler Fitchett.

Team: Conor Chivers, Lewis Ward, Jordan Taylor, Alanah Edwards, Euan Burke (Capt), Callum Bridges, Zach Bunce, Jordan Wright-Thompson, Tyler Fitchett, Beckham Hulbert
