Fifteen minute spell costs Bassett

First Half - Fantastic, superb, best ever play, excellent team work. All the Bassett players were committed and showed it, no passengers. Great attack, resilient defence.

I can′t really think of other words to describe how brilliant Bassett played in the first half against an opponent who was significantly higher up in the league. Our boys dominated the play and I believe Westlea were somewhat stunned by the assault and excellent defending should they try to breakthrough. The play was concentrated in the Westlea half of the pitch and possession was certainly in Bassett′s favour. After many attacks and near misses on the opponents goal, twenty minutes into the game James Terry managed to open the scoring.

The first half finished with Bassett maintaining the lead. Players and managers were deservedly pleased but during the team talk it was made clear that the second half should be treated as if the scoreline was still 0-0. Nothing was taken for granted. The effect of positive coaching was significant on morale and attitude of our players. The boys charged out to face the second half with energy and enthusiasm.

Westlea appeared to more aggressive in this second stage of the game. An attack on the Bassett goal was thwarted by Tyrone who had no choice other than to tackle the player. Unfortunately a penalty was awarded by an extremely polite but rather pedantic referee. This brought the score line even. Depressingly, the next fifteen minutes saw Westlea score another three goals despite some tremendous defending and goal keeper action.

Bassett didn′t give up and re-commenced the attack on Westlea, a number of tackles against our boys were questionable. Some degree of pleasure was re-introduced when James Terry scored again following a corner awarded to Bassett. But, time ran out and we finished with a 5-2 defeat.

The team were rewarded with a round of applause from parents and supporters. If their game can improve to this level and be maintained, perhaps with some additional success up front, then we can look forward to superlative games in the future.
