Bassett lose in close contest with Brunel Boys

After their midweek win, Basset were approaching this game with a renewed confidence and also a healthy respect for their opponents, who had given them a tough time in the last season. Illumination for the match was dimmer than in recent games, with the first hint of autumn approaching. It would be important for Bassett to retain its shape during the game to avoid leaving unnecessary holes available for the opponents to charge through, something recognised from their last game. Expectations of yellow and red cards were high in anticipation of the competition between the teams.

The first half started with a great deal of attacking play from Bassett, with much of the play being focused at the Brunel end. Unfortunately, Brunel were able to seize a goal after only six minutes of play. This prompted increased ferocity of attack by James Dixon, Harry & James Terry ( who was able to equalize the situation with a tremendous long shot after fifteen minutes ). The equalizer upset the Brunel goalie who could not believe what had just happened, with the trajectory of the ball having been watched by all those on the pitch, yet nothing could stop it.

With excellent defensive and mid field play from Brett Carr, Basset were able to hold the score at 1-1. after thirty minutes, James Terry nearly scored again with a well targeted shot at the top left hand corner of the Brunel goal, however the ball refused to cross the line. This meant a status quo had been maintained, a tremendous result which allowed for positive tactical review before the second half commenced.

Within two minutes of the second half, Tom Hammond managed a tremendous diving save. These crucial forty minutes were filled with spirited attack and defensive movement supported by intelligent tactics to drive against the Brunel goal. In the final ten minutes, Tom again made a superb save. Shortly afterwards, Brunel managed to score again. The Bassett side by now were beginning to show the effects of an intensive game, with some fatigue taking its toll. Everyone on the pitch played themselves fully to achieve a very small margin of defeat against a good team. The Bassett side finished the game with a small body of parents and managers confirming how genuinely impressed they were with all the boys.
