Bassett overcome enthusiastic Penhill on Remembrance Sunday

Being the day after England have beaten Argentina 3-2 in a friendly match, the learning should be that absolutely anything is possible, and the key thing to do is to take nothing for granted and go for it. This was pretty much the way in which both teams dived into action, no hesitation or holding back. Penhill were only ten men for the first twenty minutes.

The initial few minutes of the first half saw an aggressive assault on the Penhill goalmouth. Within the first ten minutes Bassett had five very near misses. It was to be only a short while before the score sheet would start notching up the goals .James "dirty boots" Dixon commenced the Bassett scoreline, with a couple of goals in quick succession.

Penhill attacked in retaliation, giving the Bassett linesman, who had recently returned from a tiring canal trip in Manchester, an opportunity to work off his aches & pains following the play up and down the pitch. However this attempt by Penhill failed to alter the direction of the game. The first half saw additional goals from Jamie Brown and James Terry. Many near misses indicated that Basset were going to have a full score sheet. The first half finished 9-0.

The teams held a two minutes silence as part of Remembrance Sunday, a very poignant moment when the players formed two semi-circles and bowed their heads. A group of silent teenagers is quite an achievement. With soldiers of previous generations remembered, Tyrone opened the score line again for Bassett. This second half saw additional goals from James Dixon, Jamie Brown (who achieved his first hat-trick), Matt, Craig Hunt, Chris Edwards and Craig Kelly.

This was a very pleasing result for Wootton Bassett who deserved the win, an improvement over their last encounter. The Penhill team also deserve special regard for their good natured play and enthusiasm throughout the game. There was not a single moment of ungentlemanly conduct or bad language from either side. Congratulations to the referee, linesmen and management on both sides who also behaved themselves.

Thank you for a pleasant morning of entertainment, although coffee facilities would be a good idea.
