Rylands Way inspires Bassett to win over Fairford

Playing on the main Bassett pitch always adds an edge of excitement and anticipation to a game. Todays match would also bring two teams together who on previous encounters had seen passions rise amongst both spectators and players alike!

The first half was a well matched event with Bassett′s Tom Hammond giving a good performance as goalie and also proving his ability with long distance kicks. Bassett defended and attacked well. Unfortunately the disciplined play was not good enough to stop a Fairford goal, which was snatched just before half time, a very dissapointing way to finish the first half. This was an unnecessarily downbeat end to a good first half.

When the fight resumed, a buoyant Bassett side prevented Fairford from getting near to the Bassett goal. Thirty minutes of play later saw Tyrone injured whilst defending, an uncommon site from the resilient player. A pleasing reward was gained five minutes later with a terrific goal from Craig Kelly which saw a long shot from a midfield position scoring a direct hit in the Fairford goal. Succeeding at equalising so long into the second half gave a fantastic uplift to the home team. The spectators hooted and roared with delight, especially Maz Fitzwilliams, who had obviously strengthened her lungs specially for todays encounter.

Fairford fouled Harry Fitzwilliams and this gave James Terry the opportunity to go for goal with a long free kick. The two man Fairford wall were bypassed by the brilliant kick which also passed through the bulk of the two teams assembled in front of the Fairford goal. Bassett had scored again, and jubilant shouts went around the ground. The upset on the Fairford faces was clear to see. The opponents attacked with vigour and sent a missile of a shot against the Bassett goal, which crashed into the cross-bar and veered off, thankfully.

Wootton Bassett finished the game triumphantly, having proved that they are capable of fighting a mature game, maintaining their spirits in adversity and succeeding in venting their frustrations appropriately at the other team. Well done Bassett, they scored first but you didn′t give up and got the reward you deserve.
