Well, this was the game that I′ll call the "nearly" match. I nearly arrived on time to spectate and report, whilst the boys nearly scored some goals and nearly had a reasonable game.

Within the first ten minutes of play, Ferndale managed to make the best of a break from Bassett control of the ball and scored the first goal of the morning. I don′t believe Bassett considered this to be a real problem as they felt themselves equal to this opponent and there would be time to recover. Bassett maintained a strong presence in this first half but just couldn′t score any goals, there was not enough power at the front to get through the solid Ferndale defence.

The phrase "déjà vu" springs to mind, as within five minutes of the second half commencing, Ferndale managed to score another goal. This was a depressing position to be in, as the boys realised it was a uphill struggle to score a goal, let alone two to equalise or three to win. A number of spirited attempts on goal were made by Jamie & Harry but were unsuccessful. Ferndale′s defence was resilient.

A number of tackles made upon the Bassett players were unfair, with the referee taking due action when he saw them. However, the tension building between the teams was visible from the sideline. Unfortunately James Terry retaliated when fouled by the opposition, this brought swift punishment by way of a red card, the instigator on the Fernadale team received a yellow. Losing James′s talents on the pitch would add to our difficulties.

The second half saw some excellent defending from Tyrone and Brett Carr, and Chris Edwards had a good game upfront. Bassett fought well with only ten players but couldn′t put a mark on the score sheet. No one would suggest that Bassett don′t have the potential, but today it was difficult for the team to get out of first gear. Maybe, the lingering early morning mist had caused some rusting of joints to occur.
