Bassett second best in battle with Spitfires

On a bitterly cold day in South Marston the girls came off second best against Swindon Spitfires.

Spitfires came out of the blocks quickly and opened the scoring in 5 minutes. Bassett defended strongly with some crunching tackles from Amy Terry and Charlotte Burke, and Leah Blanchard was called upon to make several brave saves to avoid going further behind, but gradually Bassett fought their way back into the match. Bassett started to put the Spitfires defence under pressure and only some fine saves from the Spits goalkeeper kept Bassett out. In the 20th minute Bassett finally got their just reward when Jenna McFadzean raced on to a through ball and slotted it past the Spits keeper. For the remainder of the first half it was end to end stuff and Bassett ended the half having created the better chances. Half time score 1-1.

Spitfires started the second half as they had started the first and scored two quick goals to go into a 3-1 lead. Thereafter it was an uphill battle but the girls kept working hard for each other. Spits made it 4-1, but soon afterwards Jenna scored a second to reduce the deficit to two once more. Near the end, with legs tiring, Bassett let in a further two goals to make the final score 2-6, which seemed a tad unjust given the chances that girls had created during the match.

Girl of the match was Amy Aitken
