Opening game win for Under 14 Girls

The Under 14 Girls started the season with a stunning 4-0 victory over Swindon Town in the Under 14 11-a side league at Ballards Ash. This was a particularly satisfying result as it was the team′s first competitive match at 11-a side and they were playing against more experienced opponents.

Bassett started the match well and passed the ball around as the girls acclimatised to the change from 7-a-side to 11-a-a side football. The extra space seemed to encourage the girls to play a passing game and they troubled the Swindon defence early on. In the 6th minute Amy Aitken swung a corner into the Swindon box which caused panic in the Swindon defence ending up with a defender heading past her own goalkeeper. Swindon seemed surprised to go behind and were further stunned when Jenna Macfadzean outpaced the Swindon defence to score a second in the 23rd minute. Half time score Wootton Bassett Town 2, Swindon Town 0.

In the second half Swindon seemed determined to get back into the game quickly but they were caught out in the 31st minute when a ball fired in from the left wing landed at the feet of Jenna Macfadzean who calmy fired the ball into the roof of the net Although the Swindon heads went down they continued to battle and with the assistance of a strengthening wind they pressed the Bassett defence back towards their 18 yard box. Despite the pressure Bassett still had the occasional break, and in the 44th minute Jenna Macfadzean raced past two Swindon defenders before coolly slotting the ball past the Swindon keeper, to complete a hat trick on her debut.

Most of the remaining 15 minutes was played in the Bassett half but despite having most of the pressure Swindon failed to convert their chances into goals.
