Cup holders Bassett crash out

The Cup holders are out against a battling Lydiard side

The game started very evenly with Lydiard playing the long ball over the top of our midfield, this is not the first time we have seen this tat-tic against us. Both teams were passing the ball well in the first ten minutes. However there was a difference, Lydiard were finding their own players on more occasions then Bassett. Bassett′s defence were tested time and time again, Scott, Oliver and Jack played well as they soaked up the pressure. Lydiard then made a break down Bassett′s right, a good shot and Lydiard took first blood. 1-0 to Lydiard.

Bassett came back with an attack down the left, Ben found some space, but the shot was left of the target. Again Lydiard sprint forward with their long ball strategy forcing a corner, a good header by Lydiard just over the bar of Joe′s goal. Some good passing from Tyler found Sam on the left, Sam shoots just wide. Bassett were now back in the game with some good battling from the front three. Scott released Tyler down the left who crossed to find Ben who tapped in the equaliser. Lydiard came straight back at Bassett and cracked in two long range efforts which Joe had covered. Lydiard seamed to have the rub of the green always coming out on top of the 50-50 challenges. The first half ended level at one all.

The second half started very much like the first with Lydiard′s passing more accurate than Bassett′s. Josh came on in defence almost at the same time Tyler went off after being hit in the face with the ball. Lydiard found their second goal after a goal mouth scramble, the ball struck down to Joe′s right hand side. Bassett looked like they were defending deeper and deeper allowing Lydiard to come at them and you could see a third for Lydiard at anytime. Andy and Matt "The management" made some formation changes pushing Josh up front and only two defenders at the back. Even though Callum had some good runs down the left, Lydiard′s defence was strong keeping out Bassett′s best efforts. The final score 2-1 to Lydiard which I believe was deserved.

Over the last two games Bassett has lacked passion, the want to win, I hope this returns for the next away game. Bad luck lads......
