First cup group game sees Bassett pick up a point

In a highly entertaining match both sides played attractive attacking football and a draw was probably a fair result at the end.

Bassett attacked from the kick-off and were awarded a penalty kick after five minutes when one of the Swindon players handled after Amy Aitken had swung a free kick into the box. Gemma French despatched the penalty kick with ruthless efficiency. The game swung from end to end but it was Swindon Town who scored next with a long range shot that went past the unsighted Bassett keeper. Both teams had good efforts on goal during the remainder of the first half but the keepers were in top form and George Viveash in the Bassett goal pulled off some tremendous saves. Half time score 1-1.

In the second half Bassett started brightly and a defence splitting pass from Amy Aitken left Gemma French with a clear run in on goal and she fired the ball under the Swindon goalkeeper to put Bassett back into the lead, 2-1. The lead was short live though, as a gap in the Bassett defence allowed Swindon to snatch an equaliser three minutes later to make the score 2-2. Bassett continued to play some nice passing football however, five minutes from the end Kelly Little, playing in goal in the second half, upended a Swindon forward who was charging in on goal. Kelly pulled of a great save from the resultant penalty which denied Swindon from gaining a win and meant that honours were shared in this first match in the league play-offs.

Girl of the match was Gemma French
