Bassett go down to strong Devizes side

The Under 14 Girls suffered an away defeat at the hands of a strong Devizes Town team, despite putting on a battling performance.

On a rain-soaked pitch the match started off at a furious pace, and for the first 15 minutes both teams probed each others defences. Gemma French had a couple of runs down the right which ended with a shot on target and a low cross that troubled the Devizes goalkeeper. At the other end Bassett put up a stout defence and George Viveash was called into action as the pressure from Devizes intensified. In the 20th minute Devizes opened the scoring from close range and five minutes later they scored a second to make it two nil at half time.

In the second half Katy Hall took over in goal and she was brought into action immediately as Devizes attacked, and they increased their lead in the 34th minute. There were hard but fair physical battles in all areas of the pitch and some strong challenges went in from Amy Aitken as Bassett tried to take control of the midfield. Bassett continued to create chances up front as Alana Fowler and Gemma French pressed forward to get on to the score sheet as Bassett fought to get something from the game. As the match neared its close Devizes put the Bassett goal under intense pressure and managed to grab a couple of late opportunist goals to record a 5-0 victory.

Girl of the match was Amy Aitken
