Bassett U14 Girls lose final league game

The under 14 girls team ended their league season with an away match at Swindon Spirfires and although the match ended in a 4-0 defeat, it was one of the best team performances of the season, which showed how far the girls have improved since their first match together.

Spitfires attacked straight form the kick-off shooting down the slope, and they scored twice with the first 10 minutes. After this Bassett started to find their rhythm and began passing the ball around as well as they had done all season. The game then became end to end, taking on the pace of a cup tie, with Amy Aitken making several strong runs in on the Spitfires goal, one of which ended with the opposition defenders scrambling the ball off the goal line. At the other end Kelly Little was called upon to make several important stops including a brave save when one-on-one with the opposition centre forward.

In the second half the game continued to be played at a furious pace and Bassett were awarded a free kick as a result of a pass back to the Spitfires goalkeeper. Hannah Butler blasted the ball at the combined Spitfires team camped on the goal line and then fired in another follow up shot. Finally, in desperation Spitfires conceded a penalty which was bravely saved by the Spitfires goalkeeper.

Boosted by this save, Spitfires broke away to score twice in the last five minutes to make the final score 4-0. This did not reflect the balance of play but the team performance was enough to encourage the coaching staff and the watching supporters that this had been a valiant effort by all of the girls.

Girl of the match was Hannah Butler
