Hard fought point to start the New Year

The Under 14 Girls started of the New Year with a hard fought draw against Swindon Town 'B'.

When the match began it was cold and windy and soon after kick-off it started to rain making the playing conditions extremely difficult for everyone. Bassett had the wind at their backs in the first half, but it was Swindon who got an early goal after eight minutes after a neat passing move. Bassett searched for an equaliser, but the final ball into the box was lacking. Just as it seemed as though Bassett would go into half time one nil down, Kelly Blanchard tried a speculative shot from the half way line. The wind assisted ball sailed over the stunned Swindon keeper's head into the net – (reminiscent of Mendes goal for Spurs against Man United a few days earlier, except on this occasion this goal counted).

One all at half time but facing into an increasingly tricky combination of wind and rain the match took on the tempo of an FA cup tie as both teams drove on to try and get a winner. It was end to end stuff and there were some great saves from George Viveash in the Bassett goal. The match ended one all which was probably a fair result as neither team deserved to lose. Both teams deserved an award for playing in such dreadful conditions but perhaps an award should have been given to the spectators who ended up looking like frozen lollies at the end of the match.

Girl of the match was Gemma French
