Good win for Bassett in front of a large crowd

Many of the townsfolk were at the Sports Ground on Tuesday, when the Town met Clyffe Pypard in a match which had an important bearing on the final placings in the Calne & District League table. Both sides were at full strength. Within five minutes Clyffe gained the lead through Jim Davis, and in few minutes later the same player again netted. The Town were not to be beaten and play became fast and at times robust. At the end of 30 minutes Roles the home centre forward, reduced the arrears with a good shot, and just before half time Ogbourne scored the equaliser with a good header.

For 25 minutes of the second half there was a ding-dong struggle, and neither side could gain any material advantage until after excellent midfield play, Sandell sent in a fine shot which beat Davis. The visitors tried hard to get on terms, but the Town held their own. In a forward movement by Wootton Bassett Austin handled, and J. Norris, taking the kick from 25 yards out beat Davis. Just before the end Roles, who had led his forwards well, put the Town further ahead and the final score was Wootton Bassett 5 Clyffe Pypard 2. Mr S, Honey was the referee, and he received many congratulations on his control of the game.
