Bassett start league campaign with a win

The Town's first eleven opened their Calne and District League programme at home with a win over Avebury, who were last season's champions. At the end of the first five minutes play the Town were two goals ahead through H. Angelinetta and W. Sandell. Play then ran in the visitors' favour, but the home custodian was equal to all demands until half-time.

In the second half play was fairly even for about 20 minutes, but afterwards the visitors put on pressure and eventually were awarded a penalty for hands, which resulted in a goal being scored from the mark by Lammin. This success encouraged Avebury, who shortly drew level, Horton netting with a great shot after the goalkeeper had cleared a hot drive. Just before time Flewelling accepted a forward pass and gave the Town their first victory. The home goalkeeper did much towards helping his side to gain their 3-2 success. The first eleven will visit Brinkworth tomorrow for a "friendly," and the following have been chosen: H. W. Poulter; W. Hunt and H. Clark: H. Leighfield, G. Clifford and E Fry: G. ChappelI, H. Angelinetta. E. Flewelling. W. Ogbourne and W. Sandell. Reserves-A. Pearce and W. King.
