Wootton Bassett “Yellows” arrived at Calne for their penultimate league fixture just as a mini-cricket competition started. With Calne down to a ten-man team was this an omen that this football match would end in a cricket score??

If the opening moments were anything to go by the omens looked good for Bassett as they scored with the first attack of the game. A Conor goal kick was picked up by Charlie who passed to Lewis C. Lewis stretched the play out wide to George on the left, who beat his defender and crossed for Lewis C to side foot home.

There was hardly time to note the time of the first goal when the second was scored by Bassett. Lewis C and Charlie combined and the ball was passed across the box for Jamie to score at the back post.

Moments later it was 3 when George crossed from the left, the ball was not cleared and Euan slammed home from ten yards.

Every attack was turning into a goal for Bassett and this surely couldn't continue… and that was the case when Euan passed out wide to Tom who beat the left back and crossed to the feet of Lewis C but this time the ball went just over the bar.

Bassett did make it 4-0 on 16 minutes when a Calne throw put their defence in danger deep in their own half. Under pressure the defender couldn't clear the ball which broke to Lewis C on the edge of the box and he curled a left foot shot out of the reach of the diving Calne keeper.

A minute later, Luke broke from the back and passed through to Jamie who in turn found Tom on the right. Tom cut the ball back inside to Charlie and he passed to Jamie whose shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line. Half-time: 4-0

Bassett almost extended their lead in the first 5 minutes of the second half, which belonged to the first half due to a miss calculation by the time keeper, when Lewis W picked up the ball on the half way line, passed out left to George. George's cross was met by Callum who forced a good save from the Calne keeper.

Where the goals came quick and fast in the first half, the second half saw good chances created but it was the end product that was missing. On 41 minutes Lewis W and Jamie combined on the left, Lewis's cross was headed just past the angle by Tom. Moments later a Bassett corner resulted in a scramble in the Calne 6 yard box, the ball was eventually cleared to the edge of the box where Declan shot towards goal only to see the ball hit the head of a defender and balloon over the bar.

On 48 minutes another Bassett corner bounced around the Calne box and was met by Euan whose volley produced a great one handed save from the Calne keeper. Callum took the resulting corner which was met by the head of Lewis W to make it five-nil!

Five soon became six when a long throw wasn't cleared by Calne and Tom headed the ball to Euan who hooked the ball goalwards and out of the reach of the keeper.

It was almost a magnificent 7 when a Callum freekick was met by Ben, the ball striking the right hand post. Bassett did make it 7 (and recorded their 100th league goal of the season) when Tom crossed to Lewis C who slammed the ball into the roof of the net for his hat trick.

Seven became eight on 58 minutes when Luke drove forward from midfield and found Callum out right Callum's cross went beyond the central strikers but was met at the back post by George who scored with a first time shot.

In the dying moments Declan was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when his shot slammed against the bar.

This report may read attack, attack, attack but we must not forget another clean sheet recorded by the boys. Firstly playing 4-4-2 and then introducing a 3-4-3 formation, the defensive combinations of Conor, Josh, Ben, Ed, Luke and Lewis dealt admirably with each Calne attack. Full-time: 8-0

Coach's Match Analysis: Another very good performance from the boys who played some neat passing football that created lots of chances. With Calne set up very defensively we won the game in the first 15 minutes with 3 quick well taken goals and then the lads adapted well to the different formations and positional changes we tried for the rest of the game. The quality of football was still as good due to the positive approach by the boys. Once again WELL DONE!

Player of the Match: As always, a tough decision, but today's POTM award goes to Tom Miller for unselfish use of the ball and providing “key assists” to Basset's goal scorers.

Team: Conor Chivers, Edward Fish (Capt), Luke Weekes, Ben Croydon, Josh Curtis, Lewis Ward, Callum Bridges, Euan Burke, Jamie Byron, Tom Miller, Lewis Cholod, Charlie Emmerson, George Staten
