06 Jan 2013 - Malmesbury Youth (H)

After a lengthy break from action over the Christmas period, we may have had a concern that this all-conquering team would take a while to get back into their stride - but we needn't have worried! Bassett slotted quickly into their familiar passing style, looking to attack at every possible moment and Malmesbury soon knew they were in for a difficult morning. It was pretty even, nevertheless, during the opening exchanges and Luke and Ed were called into some early interventions and Connor had to show safe hands. Soon Bassett opened the scoring, however, when a lovely pass out right from Lewis put Tom in on goal and he made no mistake from the right-side of the area - 1:0

Minutes later, Malmesbury had a breakthrough down the right for a one-on-one on goal but George tracked back at speed and snuffed out the threat before any harm was done. Tom was in devastating form down our own right wing and soon created two great chances for teammates. Firstly, he twisted and turned through the defenders to put Jamie in ( who narrowly missed) and then performed the same move to even greater effect to put Joe in who opened his account from a few yards out - 2:0

It would be unfair to pick out names at this point as all the lads now shifted up through the gears and we witnessed some great passing and moving from defence, into midfield and on into attack with everyone looking to put his team mate in. This 'total football' approach soon bore further fruit when an absolute beauty was scored by Joe. It was Tom, again, who provided the telling pass from the right but Joe's effort is a certain candidate for 'goal of the season' as he controlled the ball and lobbed the oncoming 'keeper with a deft touch. - 3:0 The rest of the half saw some further great play from Bassett but the interval whistle blew with, surprisingly, no further goals to report. Half-time: 3 - 0

If Malmesbury had plans for a second half fight back, they were cruelly dashed after just a couple of moments when a George cross from the left wing found an opposition arm and a penalty was awarded. Euan made no mistake from the spot, slamming it home with confidence to take the score to 4-0.

Now Jamie's fantastic play in the middle of the park, the ball seemingly glued to his feet, saw reward when he forced the play down the right allowing him to put the ball across to three oncoming attackers who looked to be simply queuing up to score. It was Lewis C who took the honour, stroking the ball home from a few yards out - 5:0 It was now turning into another rout as Luke ventured forward and tried his luck from a way out, narrowly missing to the right, before Jamie yet again opened up the defence, passing to Lewis , who passed to Euan who put Charlie in to chalk up our 6th goal with a confident shot from the edge of the area - 6:0

A rare Malmesbury attack then led to a corner and shot which Connor confidently smothered, showing great concentration in a match in which he was largely (yet again!) a spectator. Further Bassett goals always looked likely, however, and it was an unselfish pass inside the area from Lewis which saw George slot home from a few yards out - 7:0 It was now simply a case of how many, as Bassett mesmerised the opposition with attack after attack with all players playing their part. Ben and Josh at the back were able to continue their impressive form on either flank, snuffing out attacks and then launching their own. Our next goal was another beauty from Jamie, chipping the 'keeper after Joe cut in from the right and put him in on goal. - 8:0

The next strike was all down to Callum who fought and fought down the right all the way from the halfway line, battling through a bevy of players to find space for a cross over to Lewis who nodded in his second of the match. - 9:0 Malmesbury must, by now, have been praying for the whistle but Bassett hadn't quite finished their scoring as there was still time for a Joe pass through to Tom which he took in his stride, slamming home to make the perfect 10. Final score: 10 - 0

Man of the match - This was a consummate team performance, with every one of the 13 deserving praise for their crucial contributions. All clear on their role and working for the team throughout, even those who switched positions at different times. The Man of the Match this week goes to the WHOLE TEAM.

Coach's analysis: What a start to 2013 as the boys put on the most perfect performance & played some football that was just exhilarating to watch. The best compliment I can give them is that Match of the Day would've struggled to fit in all the games highlights let alone goals. Well done boys on an awesome performance.

Team: Conor Chivers, Edward Fish (capt.), Luke Weekes, Ben Croydon, Josh Curtis, Callum Bridges, George Staten, Euan Burke, Jamie Byron, Tom Miller, Lewis Cholod, Charlie Emmerson, Joe Fenton.
