Havant and Waterlooville 4 ‘v' 2 Swansea City – 16-Jan-2008 West Brom 2 ‘v' 4 Woking – 5-Jan-1991 Sutton Utd 2 ‘v' 1 Coventry City – 7-Jan-1989 Birmingham 1 ‘v' 2 Altrincham (Johnny King's Red&White Army) – 14-Jan-1986 Yeovil Town 2 ‘v' 1 Sunderland – 29-Jan-1949 Just some of the major cup upsets from days gone by. Was there to be another at Ballards Ash as an administrative error pitted Wootton Bassett Yellow U13s against Wootton Bassett Yellow U12s in the Wilts County Cup. Moments before the kick off, an eagle-eyed supporter spotted and removed a banana skin from the field of play….. was this just fate or an omen for a slip up to come????

The first five minutes were played entirely in the U12s half but no clear-cut chances were created by the U13s mainly due to some superb defending by the U12 centre backs and midfield. On 7 minutes the U13s did break through the U12's defensive line as Jamie's pass picked out Charlie whose instant shot was well blocked by an U12 defender. George swung in the resultant corner which was met by Lewis C on the volley to score from less than 1 yard. Parental calls for goal line technology to be installed to clearly determine if the ball had crossed the line prior to Lewis's volley were treated with contempt by fellow supporters.

The U13s maintained the pressure, and the ball, and increased their lead 2 minutes later when Jamie travelled through the midfield and shot from the edge of the box. The U12's goalkeeper made a diving save and pushed the ball onto the post but unfortunately for him it rebounded into the net.

Five minutes later the U13's extended their lead as persistence on the left by Charlie enabled him to cross the ball into the path of Lewis C who scored with a well taken volley.

As expected the U13s were in control of the game but the U12s showed some genuine character. They defended resolutely and were creative on the counter attack. However, the U13s had just a little more experience and physical presence so when any ball did get through Ed, Luke or Lewis, Conor was alert and quick off his line to clear the danger.

Bassett U13s went four-nil up on 25 minutes when Euan's freekick was not cleared and Tom fired the loose ball home from 10 yards. Moments later the U13s scored again as Jamie finished off a a good passing move which started deep in the U13s half.

As half time approached, Ben, Euan, Tom and Charlie were all involved in a fine move down the right which resulted in an excellent save from the U12's keeper. Bassett U13s did score on the stroke of half time as Jamie moved the ball across the park and passed out to Tom on the right. Charlie back-headed Tom's cross towards goal and it rebounded straight back to his feet, a first time shot from Charlie made it 6-0 Bassett U13s at half time. Half-time: 6-0

As play resumed, it didn't take Bassett U13s long to extend their lead as they scored in the fourth minute of the second half. Wide on the right, a back heel from Ben went straight to George. George's cross fell at the feet of Lewis C who twisted and shot into the corner of the net to complete his hat trick Three minutes later a corner from the right was not cleared and Jamie's firm strike gave him his hat trick also.

On 45 minutes Luke drove a free kick into the U12's penalty box but Declan's flick header was cleared off the line. The ball was half cleared and fell back at the feet of Luke his power strike from 18 yards flew inches over the bar. Luke did get on the score sheet five minutes later when George's corner was cleared and Luke slammed a half volley into the back of the U12s net.

The ninth U13's goal was soon followed by the tenth when Euan collected the ball in midfield and shot. The U12's keeper saved the shot but Lewis C was on hand to knock in the loose ball for his fourth. Bassett U13s made it eleven when Callum moved the ball down the left, passed inside to Declan, whose fine strike flew into the net.

Callum and Declan combined wide on the left again on 63 minutes, this time, Declan passed into the box and Lewis C shot low into the corner of the net for his fifth goal. As the game drew to a close a cross from the right was not cleared and Josh popped up to complete Bassett U13's 13-0 win. Full-time: 13-0

Coach's Match Analysis: A game where it's difficult to judge the team's performance and we asked them before the match to keep it simple and work as a team. They did that for a lot of the time and that in turn created some good goals which was pleasing to see. Well done boys!

Player of the Match: Composed and cultured on the ball, never a pass wasted, today's POTM award goes to Ben Croydon.

Team: Conor Chivers, Edward Fish (Capt), Luke Weekes, Ben Croydon, Josh Curtis, Lewis Ward, Callum Bridges, George Staten, Euan Burke, Jamie Byron, Tom Miller, Lewis Cholod, Declan Cox, Charlie Emmerson
