One Step Closer

Bicester Road, 17th April 2010

A hard fought 3-1 triumph over lowly Launton Sports moved Wootton Bassett Town one step closer to a return to the Hellenic Premier Division as they crossed the 60 point mark for the season and are now a point away from securing a top three finish.

However, Dave Turner and his troops will no doubt have their eyes set on more. Saturday was once again Bassett's day as Slimbridge dropped two valuable points at home against Cheltenham Saracens, who are now out of the race having finished their allotment of games. Despite Purton and Headington Amateurs both triumphing, the former must now win out to have any chance of usurping Bassett, whilst the latter travel to Slimbridge in their final game of the season – a match in which something must give.

Still though, two tricky away tests against Tytherington Rocks and Easington Sports await Bassett and positive results are required.

Against Launton, a pair of second half goals in quick succession from Sam Collier wound up the difference between the two sides after the hosts, who have had a decent run of late that includes victories over Trowbridge and Cricklade – the only team Turner's side have failed to beat at least once in the league, provided stiff resistance.

Craig Shand had opened the scoring midway through the first half, but an equaliser late in the period ensured the sides could not be separated going into the break as the visitors laboured somewhat.

Yet with his 18th and 19th goals of the season, Collier wrapped up another valuable win.
