The Hellenic League Division One West promotion chase continued to bewilder as Wootton Bassett Town dropped points at home for the second consecutive game, this time in a 1-1 draw with Clanfield.
Bassett had taken the lead through Andy Philpott, but an equaliser from their Oxfordshire visitors – who were beaten 3-0 by Dave Turner's men only a couple of weeks ago – ensured the spoils were shared.
After Purton's defeat last week at home to Easington Sports, Bassett had the opportunity to ensure Chris Pethick's men would only be able to go level on points with them. But this was chance was blown with another disappointing home result.
The damage of only drawing was limited though as Slimbridge were held to a goalless draw at Letcombe.
Cheltenham Saracens and the resurgent Headington Amateurs – both victors in their respective games – appear to be the only two sides in the top five interested in winning currently, but even then they both had wins by the slimmest of margins against strugglers Trowbridge Town and Winterbourne United respectively.
It is those two sides who Bassett face next at Rylands Way and it is arguably now an imperative that both see three points gained.
