Cheltenham Beaten by the Shortest of Lengths

Petersfield Park, 12th December 2009

Whilst the only goal of the game at Cheltenham Saracens came courtesy of a home team player, it was Wootton Bassett Town who took all three points from the match to extend their unbeaten league run to eleven, enabling them to move above Saracens in the process.

An own goal minutes before the break proved to be all that would separate the sides at Petersfield Park, a ground which in years gone by has proven to be a place of misfortune for Bassett.

After last week's disappointing draw at Lydney Town, the visit to Cheltenham was always going to be a certain six-pointer. Therefore it was the perfect time for Dave Turner's side to record only their second clean sheet of the season. And this feat was made even more impressive given their hosts' free scoring ways.

The win sees Bassett go into fourth position, two points clear of Saracens and still with two games in hand over them.

The pressure was also maintained on Slimbridge – who slipped into second after they could only scrape a draw at Tytherington. That means Bassett can now leapfrog them, although that is dependent on maximum points being taken from the three games in hand possessed over the recently promoted side.
