Bassett End Woodmarsh Woe in Style

Woodmarsh, 24th October 2009

Given Wootton Bassett Town's history at Woodmarsh there is no doubt Dave Turner's side would have been forgiven for approaching their visit to Trowbridge Town with a level of trepidation.

Since relegation to Division One West, Bassett have gained just a point from four visits to their south Wiltshire rivals and – more importantly – seen two promotion bids brought to disappointing, agonizing ends.

However, all that history was forgotten as they romped to a 4-1 victory, to ensure the leading pack remain within touching distance if victories are recorded from their remaining games in hand.

Ryan Banks, who in the absence of Shaun Terry this season has made the role of team talisman his own, netted the first two goals before Sam Collier made it three for Bassett with his fifth goal of the season – an impressive feat for a player who has been predominantly employed at the back.

In his first appearance for the first team this season, Phil Tearle found the back of the net to round of the scoring for the visiting side.

The only blot on Bassett's copybook was the fact they failed to keep a clean sheet, conceding in the closing stages. However, that will have done little to dampen Bassett's spirits as they finally got one over Trowbridge on their own patch, doing so in considerable style too.
