Lydney Leave It Late to Deny Bassett

Lydney Recreation Ground, 5th December 2009

Wootton Bassett Town's unbeaten run in Hellenic League Division One West may have extended into double figures, but they could only muster a point at Lydney Town despite leading by two goals going into the final moments of the game.

A defence worn out by having to play on an extremely heavy pitch could not withstand the hosts' late onslaught, meaning that Dave Turner's side lost the chance to eat into Slimbridge and Purton's advantage at the top of the table after their draw as well as to climb into third.

Goals either side of half time from Andy Brien and Sam Collier, who dispatched his from the penalty spot, made it seem as though Bassett were on course to do the double over their opponents, but it was not to be so.

The conditions ultimately played a part in this, but not being able to maintain leads has become something of a habit in recent weeks.

The Lydney result means that three in times in the past five games, Bassett have seen a two goal cushion evaporate. Against Easington, Bassett led by the same margin, before allowing their opposition back in, but that day a controversial penalty call secured all three points. Then at Shrewton in the County Cup a 3-1 half time lead was turned on its head by the Western League outfit, who stormed to a win by the odd goal in seven.

Still, the result did not do any real damage to the side's attempt to snatch third place from Headington. A win next week in what will be a crunch fixture at fourth place Cheltenham Saracens would mean Bassett leapfrog them, whilst maintaining two games in hand. And the aforementioned Headington are a mere point in front having played a game more.
