Bassett given a scare by Wickham Wanderers

Wootton Bassett Town A nearly suffered a shock quarter final defeat at home to Wickham Wanderers, out played and out fought Bassett found themselves 3-2 down with four minutes to go but two late strikes from George Drewitt and Craig Kelly saved the day. It was Wickham who opened the scoring when a shot from the edge of the Bassett box was deflected into his own net by Johnny Aitkenhead. Bassett got themsleves back on level terms when James Baker was brought down in the box and Phil Tearle cooly slotted home the penalty for his 20th goal of the season. He added another to his tally shortly afterwards when he fired in from close range. However, Wickham continued to play some neat passing football and themselves got back on level terms when a free kick from the edge of the box was fired straight through the Bassett wall and into the net. Bassett then created numerous chances but some outstanding saves from the Wickham keeper and some wayward finishing denied the home side. Meanwhile with fifteeen minutes to go Wickham broke down the other end and fired in the best goal of the game to put themselves back in front before Bassett's late get out of jail card gave them a semi-final place. Very harsh on Wickham who also were unlucky to lose a player in the closing stages for a second yellow card when the defender was just beaten for pace and was simply unable to pull out of the tackle. Wootton Bassett A are joined in the semi-finals by their B side who defeated Ferndale Rodbourne 3-1 after extra time.
