Westbrook made to work hard for their win

Westbrook were made to work hard for the three points by a hard working Wootton Bassett Town side. Playing up the slope it was visitors Bassett who went ahead on fifteen minutes when a superb cross from Philip Tearle was met by a powerful header from debutant Aaron Stevens. Bassett held onto the lead until five minutes before the break when Matthew Hobbs finally escaped his marker Philip Forster and fired in a powerful strike from the left hand side of the box past Jonny Aitkenhead in the Bassett goal. In the last minute of the half Hobbs again broke down the left and his cross into the box could only be palmed out by Aitkenhead and Matthew Godsell pounced to put the home side in front on the stroke of half-time. Bassett, playing down the slope, took the game to Westbrook in the second period but couldn't get the elusive equaliser. The best chance fell to Callum Snooks but he volleyed over the bar when it looked easier to score. At the other end Matthew Hobbs nearly wrapped it all up for Westbrook when he was clean through following a powerful mazy run but his shot from point blank range was superbly saved by Jonny Aitkenhead to keep Bassett in the game. With five minutes remaining it was game, set and match to Westbrook when the Bassett defence failed to deal with a long ball and Matthew Godsell connected to put Westbrook 3-1 ahead. In a repeat of the first half, Westbrook again scored in the final minute to give a very flattering look to the final score line but one which took Westbrook back to the summit and maintained their 100% record.
