Bassett win top of the table clash

Wootton Bassett Ladies travelled to Christian Malford for this top of the league clash against Chippenham Town. After two weekends of heavy rain the sun was shining and the pitch perfect on this chilly winter afternoon. Chippenham started brightly and put Bassett under some early pressure but did not take their chances and it was Bassett who opened the scoring when the lively Kirsty Hulse was put through to slot the ball to her near post to beat the diving Chippenham keeper. Chippenham fought back with a goal from Lucy Bailey. The rest of the half was a close encounter but before half time Sarah Tyas forced the ball over the line from a corner to give Bassett a half time lead of 2 – 1.

As expected Chippenham started well after the break, but Hulse scored her second, and Bassett's third to extend their lead. With fifteen minutes to go Lucy Bailey pulled another goal back for Chippenham but Bassett held on with Jodi Steenaart denying Chippenham their equaliser in the dying seconds smothering the ball at the feet of the fast approaching Chippenham forward. Steenaart's drop kick brought the final whistle giving second place Bassett the win to keep them well in touch with league leaders Chippenham.
