Bassett outgun Spitfires

Wootton Bassett continued their fine start to the new season with an away trip local opposition Swindon Spitfires at South Marston Recreation Ground. A hard pitch made early play a little unpredictable with the ball bouncing awkwardly at times causing problems for both teams. Catherine Reid opened the scoring upon 8 mins after combining well down the right hand side with Kirsty Hulse splitting the home defence with some fine one touch football. Bassett continued to pressure the home team and their efforts paid off when Becky Poole on her league debut for Bassett finished well after a move down the left hand side. As the game settled the home team began to launch a few attacks of their own and were rewarded with a goal when Ali Knight just failed to clear the ball from crossing the line. The Spitfires then lost their keeper after colliding with the upright of her goal. Bassett's third goal came from the tirelessly working Kirsty Hulse who had caused problems throughout the first half gained reward for her hard work with a goal of her own. Catherine added her second of the half from the penalty spot after Sarah Tyas was adjudged to have been fouled in the area. Reid scored at her second attempt after hitting the cross bar with her first effort only for the referee to insist the kick was re taken because of an infringement in the penalty area.

It took just one minute of the second half for Reid to complete her second hat trick of the campaign with a fine strike catching the opposition cold early on. Spitfires were next to score with their second of the game and they defended much better and with Bassett beginning to tire a little in the hot September sun. Bassett brought on some fresh faces (Lorraine Gosling for Julie Miles and Tracie Mackeddie for the injured Ali Knight Bassett's Capt.) which helped them regain the initiative.

It was not until Bassett made a further change 75 mins (Susan Shaw coming on for Rebecca Poole who was suffering from cramp)that they further increased their lead when Kirsty Hulse who had switched to the left hand side added her second goal of the game after an individual run into the penalty area beating the keeper on her near post. Susan Shaw then added Bassett's seventh goal with a header from a corner from the left-hand side.
