Wootton Bassett maintain unbeaten league run

Wootton Bassett Town continue to keep their good record untarnished and have won three home matches on successive Saturdays but the one played last week was the hardest so far this season and certainly the best seen on the sports ground for many weeks.

The visitors were Avebury in the Calne & District League fixture. Up until last week Avebury's record was little below that of the Town so the game was a desperate struggle for the full 90 minutes. Considering that the Victoria were playing over the road it was an excellent crowd who saw the Town come out with a victory of 2 goals to 1.

The game had been in progress for 25 minutes and each defence had held out well when Bartlett of Avebury, who was a good worker all through, gave his side the lead much to the pleasure of the contingent of spectators who had come from over the Downs. Bassett did not lose heart at this reverse and just before half time "Markey" [Mark Titcombe] ran through to bring the scores level with a good drive.

The opening of the second half witnessed an even greater determination on the part of both teams to win and for fully 15 minutes neither side could pierce the defence but finally Jack Norris, the Town's right half, shot from 25 yards out and scored the winning goal. The game was a distinct credit to both teams and was the cleanest seen for many a day.
