Goalless draw yields potentially valuable point

Royal Wootton Bassett Town picked up a potentially valuable point as they drew 0-0 away against Bishops Lydeard.

Following on from last week's important first league win of the season against Ilminster Town, the result is another step in the right direction as Bassett aim to climb off the bottom of the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division table.

However, Bassett will feel somewhat disappointed not to have started a mini winning streak.

Fresh off her hat trick last week, Maddy Elliott came close for the visitors in the first half, with Megan Young also having a good chance to put Bassett ahead before the break.

It was in the second half though that Bassett had their best opportunities. Back with the club after a short spell with Cheltenham Town, Libby Davies almost proved to be Bassett's hero as she struck the post and saw a trio of goals ruled out for offside - including a headed effort that was disallowed somewhat controversially with Davies appearing not to have strayed beyond the last defender.

It was certainly not all Bassett though, with Bishops Lydeard - 4-2 winners when the teams met in Wiltshire back in November - posing questions of their visitors, but a fine performance from 'keeper Millie Powell made certain of a second consecutive clean sheet and a share of the spoils.

Bassett still find themselves at the foot of the table, though just two points now separate them from Poole Town who have played two games more.

Two wins from their final three matches will therefore be enough for Bassett to avoid finishing bottom. And that could be reduced to just a single victory if Poole fall to defeat against Warminster Town in their final fixture next weekend.

There's still plenty of work for Bassett to do - but this was another small positive step in the right direction as Simon Harrison's side seek to pull off some late season heroics.
