Close but, again, no cigar as Bassett suffer Sherborne setback

Sustain Stadium, Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 18 September 2022

Another closely fought contest, another defeat for Royal Wootton Bassett Town. Simon Harrison's side remain winless in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Sherborne Town in their first home fixture of the new campaign.

As with their season opener away at Bristol Rovers, Bassett took the lead only to finish the afternoon empty-handed - although this time the game produced only three goals as opposed to the ten against Rovers.

Bassett opened the scoring midway through the first half when captain Laura Jefferies delivered a towering corner that, not for the first time in her lengthy career with the club, beat everyone and swung into the back of the net.

Sherborne - who impressed as they finished third last season, came out strong following the restart though and were level within minutes of the game resuming as a cross from the right was bundled in by Sophie Garcia.

The visitors then struck what proved to be the decisive third goal with around quarter of an hour remaining as Orla East raced onto a defense splitting through ball and coolly slotted home.

While suffering a second defeat, Bassett can take solace from the fact that they again ran their opponents close - and were unfortunate not to take anything from the match.

Demonstrating how competitive the division is set to be, with their win, Sherborne are the only side in the division to still boast a 100% per cent record. And that's with all teams having played just two matches.

Bassett, meanwhile, are one of two sides yet to register a point - and something will have to give next week when they visit Poole Town, who are also yet to get off the mark.
