Bassett suffer Rovers rout

Royal Wootton Bassett Town suffered a heavy 9-0 defeat away against promotion chasing Forest Green Rovers in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division.

By far Bassett's worst defeat of the season so far, Rovers dominated from start to finish, scoring four times in the opening half before adding a further five in the second half. In all, seven different players got on the scoresheet for the hosts.

The goals came early and often, with Estelle Randall curling home the game's opener within the opening quarter of an hour.

Rhian Robbins quickly doubled her side's lead before grabbing her second after Ellie Briscoe had also got in on the act.

A fine goal from Poppy Mortimer got Rovers going in the second half before Randall became the second player to net a brace, scoring her side's sixth.

It was soon seven, Nynka Rucker making it two goals in a matter of minutes.

Holly Hughes and Zoe Boyd then completed the scoring on a difficult afternoon for Bassett's young side.

Prior to this loss, Bassett's biggest margin of defeat this season was by four goals away against Torquay United. While struggling in the division, they had therefore rarely been blown away. But the visit to Rovers proved one game too much.

Bassett will hope to bounce back next week and at least reclaim some pride. - but their schedule doesn't get any easier with a visit to Torquay on the cards.
