Bassett suffer late set piece setback

Sustain Stadium, Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 8 January 2023

Royal Wootton Bassett Town lost on their return to action in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division as Warminster Town triumphed 1-0 courtesy of a late Millie Spratt free kick.

Spratt struck with ten minutes remaining to condemn Bassett to their eighth defeat in nine games.

While Simon Harrison's side remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the table, this was another match in which Bassett did not deserve the defeat they ultimately suffered.

There was little between the teams throughout the match and - if anything - Bassett were on top in the period just before Warminster scored, with Nia Davies hitting the post for the home side.

Bassett have been short of luck throughout the season and that continued in their first game of the new year.

There is still plenty to play for with the team by no means cut adrift despite being at the foot of the table with just a point to their name.

Next up is a home Wiltshire County Cup semi final against County League Durrington - a contest Bassett will be desperate to win to move within touching distance of silverware and to generate some much needed confidence to take into their remaining league fixtures.

Bassett are then due to play four further home fixtures in a row which will be crucial to determining their league status.

Recent performances certainly haven't been the problem. Here's hoping though that the rub of green and positive results will start to fall Bassett's way.
