Luckless Bassett fall to Sherborne defeat

Although ultimately falling to a convincing sounding 3-0 defeat at Sherborne Town, Royal Wootton Bassett Town were left cursing their luck come full time of a match in which Bassett merited much, much more than they came away with.

Simon Harrison's side hit the woodwork three times in their latest defeat - a result that means the team stay bottom of the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division, but one which could well have been very different had Bassett got the rub of the green.

Bassett's performance was certainly deserving of more. With Sherborne flying high near the top, the neutral would perhaps have expected this to be a relatively straightforward win for the hosts.

But they were forced to work hard for the win - and also very fortunate not to have conceded the number they ended up scoring.

Kelly Snook gave Sherborne the lead on ten minutes.

But Bassett had the better of the opportunities for the remainder of the half and twice struck the woodwork inside a span of four minutes as Megan Young and Libby Davies came within centimetres of finding the net.

Sherborne then scored twice in quick succession shortly after the restart through Becky Narramore and an own goal.

Davies again hit the post in the final minute to conclude what had been a promising, yet frustrating afternoon as Bassett's search for a first league win goes on.
