Clinical Bassett defeat Malmesbury

Despite cruising to an 8-1 away win against Malmesbury Youth, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 13 Blue manager and perfectionist, Martin Jeffries demanded more from his team, who were clinical in-front of goal but gave up too many chances.

Bassett started the first half like a steam train finding themselves 2-0 up inside four minutes, both goals coming from the left hand side. First Jefferies set up Cinquegrani and then a fine low cross from Sturmey was turned in by in-form striker Hicks.

Hicks' movement was fantastic, staying on-side and latching on to several through balls only to be denied by good Malmesbury goalkeeping.

On 28 minutes Bassett won a free kick on the edge of the box, delivered by sharpshooter Hyde for Cinquegrani to head in for his second – a training ground set piece, 3-0.

On 29 minutes Malmesbury's striker missed a one on one opportunity with Bassett keeper Davis saving.

Two minutes later Davis tipped over from a long range shot.

Five minutes into the second half Hyde scored from the edge of the box, 4-0.

On 40 minutes, Jefferies appeared to have scored from range with the ball ricocheting off the exterior framework of the goal, a more convincing celebration would have fooled the ref into awarding a goal.

Then on 44 minutes Jefferies put through Hicks to calmly slot in from inside the box, 5-0.

Three minutes later Cinquegrani put through Hicks again for 6-0. And Hicks scored again on 49 minutes to make it 7-0 and take his tally to four in the game.

After 53 minutes, the Malmesbury striker was again through on goal one-on-one only to be foiled by the Bassett keeper.

Two minutes later a well worked free kick and header saw Malmesbury get off the mark and scupper the Bassett defenders' and keeper's hopes of a clean sheet, 7-1.

Then on 70 minutes Bassett's most experienced player Cranswick-Coates slotted in to make the final score 8-1.

Man of the Match was Jefferies with a commanding midfield performance unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal.

Bassett now have a two week break for half term, returning on the 3rd November to play at home against Croft Junior Blue (kick off at 10:30am).
