Ladies battle to Trowbridge triumph

The combination of testing conditions and tricky opponents was not enough to halt Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies' winning run as they sealed a 2-0 triumph against Trowbridge Town.

Bassett have now won twelve straight games in the league and, with Frampton Rangers not in action, now stand five points clear at the top of the table.

This was one of the least straightforward of Bassett's victories during that run, with the points not being sealed until late on.

The heavy pitch at Woodmarsh and swirling winds helped neither team. And they helped create a frantic opening period in which both teams had chances.

The visitors eventually found themselves in front though. Lauren Kayll stole possession and picked out Emily Arrell, whose slick turn on the edge of the box created space for her to set up Lisa Coe to provide the opener.

Shortly after, Trowbridge came close to equalising as Abi Footner was forced into a solid save before the resulting corner led to a scramble in the box that saw the ball hacked off the line.

Bassett then had a similar chance at the other end as close to five players sought to force the ball over the line following a corner, but the hosts managed to survive.

After the restart Bassett did assert themselves more, but stoic defending kept them out as Arrell, Kayll and Holly Baker all came close.

Eventually though a second arrived to calm the nerves. The ball found its way to Zoe Shellard who served up a delicious cross, which Hayley Huckin guided in after beating her marker.
