19 May 2013 - Wroughton Youth (N)

Date of Match: 19 May 2013 Team/Age Group: Under 13s – Yellows – Division 2 Winners Play-Off Opponents: Wroughton Youth (Neutral Ground) Result: Lost 1-6 Scorer(s): Lewis Cholod

The omens weren't great as Wootton Bassett Yellows turned up in their yellow strip to play the Division 2 Winners play-off just in time to see the team in yellow get beat in the play-off match before them.

It was Wroughton who started the game the stronger team and looked more confident in their play. Indeed it was Wroughton that took the lead in the 7th minute when a bouncing ball was handled by a Bassett defender and a penalty was awarded. A firm strike low inside the left hand post gave our keeper no chance to keep the scores level.

Wroughton came close to extending their lead on 15 minutes when a chipped shot to the back post required a finger tipped save to push the ball around the post. Bassett's first real chance came moments later when a Bassett attack resulted in a corner. The corner was met by a Bassett head but the Wroughton goal keeper made a good save to keep his side in front.

A minute later space was created by a Bassett forward, looking up he passed a great ball behind the Wroughton defence. The Bassett forward ran onto the ball as the keeper came off his line, both players met the ball at the same time and it spun out towards our forward. As defenders closed down on him, the forward got the ball out from under his feet but shot inches wide as the goal beckoned.

Five minutes before half time a free kick was conceded by Bassett. A fine shot from the Wroughton forward sailed over the wall and into the roof of the Bassett net. Half-time: 0-2

In the opening stages of the second half the game was all but sealed for Wroughton as from a corner the ball bounced around in the Bassett 6-yard box and then a goal bound shot was deflected into the top corner to put the Bassett boys 3-0 down. Three became for on 43 minutes when the ball was allowed to bounce over the central defender and the Wroughton forward ran on to volley home the ball for his hat trick.

With the game as good as lost Bassett started to actually believe in their ability and dominated a period of play which kept Wroughton on the back foot. On 48 minutes a long Bassett free kick “flick-headed” just past the post. A minute later the same situation but this time the free kick squirmed through the legs of the Wroughton keeper but he was alert enough to turn around and drop out the ball before it rolled over the line. It was third time lucky for Bassett as a minute later another long free kick bounced around the Wroughton box and was hooked into the back of the net to make it 1-4.

The period of Bassett dominance came to a brutal end when the boys received some of their own medicine. A long free kick by Wroughton sailed over everyone and the advancing forward comfortably scored when faced with a one-on-one.

In the final moments of the match Wroughton made it 6 when a corner was headed against the Bassett bar to ricochet back off a couple of players to a Wroughton to score from 3 yards.

This was a tough end to an excellent season for Wootton Bassett Yellows and Conor, Josh, Ben, Ed, Luke, Lewis W, Tom, Euan, Jamie, Callum, George, Joe, Declan, Lewis C and Charlie all deserve recognition for how they have played as a team and how they have achieved as a team this season. Full-time: 1-6

Coach's Match Analysis: A match where nothing went right and despite the lads trying to get back into the game we were beaten by the better team on the day. To finish as runners up is still an excellent achievement by the boys and I am extremely pleased of all 15 players. I know all the other coaches feel the same. Well done boys on a superb season.

Player of the Match: A game where quality of touches came before quantity, today's POTM goes to Jamie Byrom.

Team: Conor Chivers, Edward Fish (Capt), Luke Weekes, Ben Croydon, Josh Curtis, Lewis Ward, Callum Bridges, Euan Burke, Jamie Byron, Tom Miller, Lewis Cholod, Charlie Emmerson, Joe Fenton, George Staten, Declan Cox
