Bassett on top from the off

Wootton Bassett were on top from the off, pushing Lydiard back into their own half. Tyler and Josh W were linking up well on the left testing the Lydiard defenders. A great pass from Tyler allowed Sam to run goal bound, forcing the Lydiard defence to clear the ball for a corner. Tyler takes the corner and finds the head of Arron, Arron headers the ball to Sam, Sam shoots but it's cleared only as far as Arron, Arron headers the ball just wide of the target. Bassett were passing the ball well and using their wingers to their advantage. Arron plays a great ball into Josh W, Josh runs goal bound and shoots, but the attempt is saved. Lydiard struggled to clear the ball from their own goal mouth, with Sam, Josh on several occasions picking up the goal kicks. Again Arron plays in Sam, Sam shoots but hits the post. Bassett are storming forward and Lydiard have no answers. The link play up front looked very good indeed, a well won ball from Fraser is laid off to Arron, Arron as cool as you like plays the ball over the top of the defence, Josh W runs onto the ball, but the Lydiard defence clear their lines.

Then against the run of play Lydiard push Bassett back but the back four of Scott, Regan, Jack and Josh H are just too strong and clear every attack with some ease. Lydiard again attack Bassett and only manage to get a shot away from distance which Joe saves. Then the first goal, a great ball from Fraser allows Josh W to run through the Lydiard back line and shoot, the ball finds the back of the net. From the kick off Bassett are pushed back and Joe again is forced to make the save. Then the goal of the match for me, a ball flicked over the top by Fraser, finds Josh W, Josh shoots and for the second time hits the back of the net. Bassett are starting to look comfortable now. Lydiard attack again but Regan deals with the attack the plays the ball to his left for Scott, Scott travels with the ball then plays in Josh W down the left, Josh runs goal bound and cross the ball, Tyler is given an empty goal to header the ball into but the ball just travels over the cross bar, unluckily. Again good work by Josh W finds Sam, Sam runs goal bound with the ball strapped to his feet, Sam shoots and finds the back of the net for Bassett's third. Josh H was typically strong in the right of defence supporting Arron when required. Half time 3 – 0 to Bassett

Lydiard still had no answers for Bassett in the second half. Scott was off and Callum G was on. Bassett fourth was very well worked down the left, a great ball from Josh W as side footed in by Sam, it was the speed in which the ball was played that beat the Lydiard defenders. Tyler was battling well in the middle of the park supporting Fraser and Arron. Lydiard attacked but Josh H won the ball back and laid the ball off to Regan, the central defender ran with the ball through the hart of Lydiard who could not beat the weaving and speed of Regan's run. Regan played the ball into the feet of Arron, but Arran's shot was wide of the target. Then Bassett's fifth, Arron played in Fraser who wound up his right foot the smacked the ball into the back of the Lydiard goal. Bassett were well on top now and Lydiard just did not know how to respond. Bassett won a corner, Tyler took the corner well with height and good length the ball is cleared to Fraser, Fraser strikes the ball well and tucks the ball just underneath the Lydiard cross bar for Bassett's sixth. Fraser is off and Max is on. Callum is working hard and played some good headers with distances as Lydiard attempt to play the ball over the top of the Bassett defence. Max is working hard in the middle of the park playing some good balls for the forward to run onto, which is supported by forward work as Bassett, break up front. Fraser is back on and is soon in the action, a great ball from Fraser finds Tyler, Tyler shoots and finds the back of the net for the seventh. Then against the run of play Lydiard score through some poor defending.

On games like this the back four don't get much of a mention, but it must be said without them you don't have a team. Well done a great win.
