County Cup Final "here we come"

Credit should go out to both teams "what a game". I must also say I have never met a bunch of parents so nervous before a football game!

Wroughton started stronger than Bassett from the kick off pushing Bassett back, Wroughton did have the small slope and the wind behind them which offered an advantage. The game was being played down the wings most of the time with each team conceding throws. Then Wroughton play a ball over the top a real tester for Jack, who deals with the danger by clearing the ball into touch. Again Wroughton break, and again Jack runs backwards towards his own goal, meanwhile Joe runs out of goal to make the save. Wroughton are then given a free kick, which is hit well towards the penalty spot, but Joe saves again. Then Bassett break down the right through Arron, Arron forces his way through the Wroughton defence to find Fraser, Fraser forces the corner. The corner is taken but Wroughton clear their lines. Again Wroughton push Bassett back but the defence of Josh, Jack, Regan and Scott dealt with all the pressure as Wroughton attempted to find the gaps. Callum M wins the ball in midfield, lays off the pass to Fraser, Fraser finds Josh W, Josh shoots but finds the side netting of the Wroughton goal. The first half was all Wroughton with Bassett on the back foot, I can only remember the two breaks in the Wroughton half. Sam was the loan forward who ended up dropping back to help defend, it was a tough start to the cup tie, and at this stage Wroughton were looking the stronger side. Joe was very strong in goal today reading the game well, and saved Bassett several times in the first half. Half time 0-0.

I'm not sure what Andy and Matt said at half time but it worked, Bassett came back at Wroughton very hard, a well won ball by Callum found Fraser who was awarded a free kick. Arron took the free kick, but miss hit the ball wide of the Wroughton goal. Bassett were on top Josh W and Ben were having a blinder down the right, working hard and supporting each other. Bassett were using the slope and the wind to their advantage, Wroughton could not clear their lines. Josh W received a great ball from Scott, Josh drove goal bound and crossed the ball, Ben shoots buts its wide, and this is the first real goal opportunity of the day. Sam is replaced by Tyler. Tyler finds himself in the action straight away and breaks through the Wroughton defence and crosses the ball, Ben manages to get on to the end of the ball and shoots, but the shot goes just wide. Bassett were now controlling the game, with Arron, Callum M and Fraser winning the ball in midfield, I must say there was some very big "but fair" tackles going in. All the players were being strong one specific memory was when Fraser went shoulder to shoulder with Wroughton's best player. Every time Wroughton attacked the ball it was taken away from them, Jack and Regan were running the central defence not giving the Wroughton attackers a look in. Bassett win a free kick Tyler steps up, but hits the side netting, you could see this going all the way to penalties. Bassett again break, through Tyler, Tyler plays a great ball to Ben, Ben shoots but it's saved. Then against the run of play Wroughton break, Jack deals very well kicking the ball out for the throw. Final score after full time 0-0. Looks like we are going into extra time ten minutes each way!

The lads were extremely tired they had put everything into the first sixty minutes. Could they turn this around? From the off Basset again looked the stronger team pushing Wroughton back. Ben again breaks down the right and finds Arron, Arron shoots, buts it's pushed away by the Wroughton goal keeper. Ben shoots but again it's saved. Bassett were placing pressure onto Wroughton and won a corner, Tyler takes the corner which Wroughton clear, but only as far as Fraser, Fraser shoots, but it looked like it was missed kicked, the ball loops up, helped by the wind drops into the right hand corner of the Wroughton goal. Bassett take the lead, the cheer from the parents was great!!! The lads also celebrate, with Fraser diving across the floor. Bassett were clearly the stronger side and winning the ball with almost every tackle, Josh H breaks and plays a good ball into Josh W, Josh runs goal bound and shoots, but the Wroughton goal keeper saves. First half of extra time Bassett lead 0-1.

Ten minutes remaining, could Bassett hang on? Scott is replaced by Jake. Wroughton attack as they start to throw everyone forward, but Bassett deal the attack well and Jake clears as only Jake can, right foot through the back of the ball. Then Bassett break, Josh W finds Tyler, Tyler works the space and runs goal bound, mean while Ben is flying into the right hand side, Tyler has done the hard work and very unselfishly passes to Ben who taps in Bassett's second. I must say that Ben deserved this goal, as he worked so hard down the right. Callum G is on and Ben is off and finds himself defending as Wroughton throw everything at Bassett, Wroughton start attacking through their best player, but Joe is up to the challenge and pushes the shot around the goal. Final score 2-0 to Bassett.

I'm so pleased for the lads they all worked so hard today for the victory which they disserved, they all ran their legs off to take the win today. Also, credit should go to Wroughton who played a fair game today, arguably this should have been the final today it was most very worthy of a final. Next week we have Cup game number two, it would be great to attend two finals. Well done to all.
