Bassett fight for Cup glory

Bassett started very strongly from the off with Sam and Fraser linking up well up front forcing an early corner. The corner was cleared by White Horse Juniors but only as far as Sam who played in Callum M on the left, who crossed the ball back to Sam who stuck the ball goal bound but it was just wide of the White Horse goal. Bassett were on top forcing White Horse back into their own half. A great play from Regan to Josh W who played a good ball to Callum M, Callum made room on the left for the shot, but it was just wide. The ball was cleared to Sam who stuck the ball goal bound hitting the cross bar, the ball deflected off the crossbar back to Sam who could not keep the second shot down as it sailed over the top of the goal. Bassett deserved a goal but right now could not find the back of the net. Josh W again played in Callum M who ran passed the defence giving room for the shot, but again it was just wide, what did Bassett need to do to score? Arron on the right found some space and made the perfect cross in front of the White Horse goal, but it could not be converted. Sam again had an opportunity to shoot but again it went just wide, Sam did not have his goal scoring boots on today!

There was no way that White Horse could keep Bassett out for much longer, a great move from Jake found Fraser, who played in a ball to Callum M who stuck it in the back of the net. Bassett were one up. The defence of Jack, Regan, Scott and Jake looked strong, through the game and did not allow White Horse to break through. Bassett were out playing White Horse and superb run down the right by Arron who played a good ball into the feet of Tyler who shot but missed the target. Then Bassett's second, a corner taken by Tyler found Fraser who smacked the ball into the back of the net. Bassett two up with ten minutes remaining. Then White Horse broke down Bassett's right, and put together some good passing, a mistake allows the shot to be taken which finds the back of the net. The score line was now 2-1 to Bassett. Sam was given two good opportunities to score but could not convert. Half time 2-1 to Bassett.

In the second half Bassett did not give White Horse a look in. Every ball was contested and won by Bassett. Then Bassett's third, a well taken corner by Jake found the head of Arron who made no mistake in finding the goal. Bassett lead by three goals to one. Then the goal we all wanted to see, a short corner was taken, Sam stuck the ball from some thirty yards finding the top corner of the goal. This took the pressure of Basset who now had a three goal advantage. Bassett were on top and continued to play their football inside the White Horse half, a good ball from Josh W found Tyler who had a shot at goal, but the White Horse goal keeper pushed the ball away to the on coming Ben who banged the ball into the back of the net for Bassett's fifth. Then an event! Joe for the first time makes a good catch, which was his only real save of the day. Josh H in right back made some strong tackles and supported both Ben and Arron on the right very well. The last move of the match was a free kick, Tyler stuck the ball well goal bound but it was cleared convincingly by White Horse Juniors.

Although Bassett won, I felt that it was not the win that it could have been! Missed shots and the bunching in midfield did not help in our normal open passing style that we strive for. On many occasions Bassett players were competing for the small ball! However if we win when we are not on top form, who can ask for anything else. Well done a good result.
