Youngsam Stunner Stuns Shortwood in Last Minute

Rylands Way, 24 August 2004

Andy Youngsam volleyed Bassett to their first points of the season with a stunning twenty yard effort in the fourth minute of stoppage time to stun visitors Shortwood who had controlled the game from the off.

Youngsam delivered the blow after Bassett continually knocked on Shortwood's door in a tight and end to end second period.

The first half was a different story with the visitors dominating the home side. Pete Ralph had a shot cleared off the line from a Gary Marshall corner before Lee Flynn did brilliantly to block the rebound on six minutes.

Tricky winger Lee Pritchard put through Matt Moore three minutes later after Moore had got away from marker Matt Bennett but Moore but the ball over the bar.

Steve Yeardley found himself in the book on 11 minutes for a stupid challenge on the pacey Moore.

Chris Greenough came close for Shortwood on the fifteen minute mark, hitting over from fifteen yards.

In the 27th minute, Steve Bunting hit wide following good linkup work between Bennett and Youngsam.

The Bassett defence was exposed again on half an hour, Moore heading over from Russ Chamberlain's cross. Tim Haddock found the side netting in the 36th minute after Pete Ralph's through ball.

Six minutes from the break, Lee Flynn was forced to pull off a great save from a Pritchard header following a Adam Smith free kick the Bassett defence failed to clear. Flynn then kept out another Moore effort to keep the scores tied at half time.

Bassett woke up after the break and finally found some momentum – three minutes in Matt Bennett had a shot deflected just wide of the mark.

John Magani then had a great chance to open the scoring after Youngsam played him through but Magani blasted over from twelve yards.

The Bassett midfield allowed Shortwood to break in the 58th minute and Pritchard came close to scoring after capitalising on a Rich Willis mistake.

Mark Vaughan then replaced Adam Greaney to add more bite at the back.

Andy Hallett was next to make a mistake and allow Shortwood a chance on goal but Pritchard fired wide of the net.

On seventy minutes, John Magani was replaced by Ben Gascoyne before Dave Tyler replaced the impressive Steve Bunting four minutes later.

Lee Flynn gave Bassett a scare thirteen minutes from time, as he was caught off his line and Shortwood were allowed a shot at an open goal but the ref pulled play back for a foul on Flynn.

Andy Youngsam provided Matt Bennett a good chance in the 85th minute but Bennett headed straight at 'keeper Ewan Prentice.

Then four minutes into stoppage time up stepped Youngsam to produce a wonder goal as he struck the back of the net with a twenty yard volley leaving Prentice no chance. Youngsam also tied with Paul Patel for top scorer so far this year! He was then booked for taking his shirt off which was an action not needed by referee Andrew Theaker.

Manager's Man of the Match: Geoff Swatton – worked his heart out all game.

Scoop's Man of the Match: Lee Morse and Steve Bunting – produced solid displays in the middle following an iffy start to the evening.

Scoop Rating: 6/10 – A shaky performance especially at the back with the back four being exposed regularly. Great goal to seal victory.
