Hungerford Hang Bassett Out to Dry

Bulpit Lane, 31st August 2004

Wootton Bassett Town were once again on the other end of a four goal drubbing by Hungerford Town as they lost by four goals to one in a dire performance.

From the off Bassett were being attacked and after a minute Lee McMullen came close as he headed over a Danny Clayton corner.

A deflected John Magani shot went wide four minutes later before Shuan Thorp had a free header from another Clayton set piece but Lee Flynn held on to the ball well.

On twenty minutes Hungerford took the lead as Paul Patel got on the wrong side of Thorp and dragged him down in the box, captain Darren Howell disposing of the penalty easily.

At this point Bassett's heads dropped and this took its toll as Hungerford took advantage and were relentless in attack.

Thorp was denied in the 24th minute as Lee Flynn tipped wide his shot from six yards out after Thorp ran through the Bassett defence untouched.

The home sides lead was doubled in the 28th minute as Paul Patel failed to clear a Daniel Kirby header off the line and the ball just went over the line following a Howell corner to the back post.

McMullen then failed to hit the target four minutes from half time. Rich Willis then allowed Thorp a clear shot on goal but Flynn denied his opponent with a comfortable save.

A minute inside stoppage time and Thorp made it 3-0 as Lee Morse tried to head the ball back to Flynn but Thorp picked the ball up and slotted under the Bassett 'keeper from ten yards out.

At the break Bassett made a double change with Dave Tyler replacing the injured Matt Bennett and Paul Patel coming off for Rob Hopkins.

Nine minutes after the restart another Clayton set piece nearly created a goal as Kirby headed one over from ten yards.

In the 63rd minute, Howell hit over from twenty yards before Mark Vaughan replaced Lee Morse.

Bassett continued to be second best and had limited chances as Steve Bunting hit well wide from a 25-yard free kick in the 66th minute.

Howell could have made it four a minute later but his fifteen yard effort was firstly parried by Flynn then headed over by Hopkins.

Ben Gascoyne gave Bassett a glimmer of hope twenty minutes from time with a powerful, low effort going under James Domm after Steve Yeardley had squared it to him.

However, this wasn't to be as another Clayton corner was met by Kirby and his header floated over Flynn and into the back of the net in the 90th minute.

With an FA Cup tie on Saturday, Bassett need to show more desire, commitment and effort if they are to progress and with performances like this one every week they may not get very far.

Scoop's Man of the Match: Dave Tyler and Steve Yeardley – Both worked hard to try and get something out of the match but to no avail.

Scoop Rating: 4/10 – A dismal effort from which no positives can be taken. Need to do drastically better if they are to progress in the FA Cup.
