Bassett Again Fire Blanks as North Leigh Net Four

Rylands Way, Tuesday 9th November 2004

Bassett again failed to find the back of the net as they fell to a 4-0 home defeat to North Leigh thanks again to silly errors costing themselves at the back.

The visitors were never four goals better than Bassett and this was evident in the first half when Bassett continually knocked on the North Leigh but never managed to break through it.

On six minutes, Steve Yeardley gave the ball away stupidly at the back, Adam Hamp intercepted the ball but his shot from twenty yards went wide of the post.

Yeardley played a part in North Leigh's first goal – deflecting a thirty yard effort by Harry Burnley into the back of the net as the ball went in off the crossbar.

Geoff Swatton beat North Leigh 'keeper Alan Foster on 22 minutes, but his shot came back out off the post after latching onto a Dave Tyler ball.

Three minutes later, Dave Tyler did no better. A one-two between Matt Bennett and Steve Bunting sent Bennett racing into the corner and laid the ball back to Tyler who hit wide from twelve yards.

Bassett shouts for a penalty were waved away on 28 minutes after Yeardley had been tripped inside the box before Swatton had a shot easily saved by Foster in first half injury time.

Ten minutes after the break, Tony Grant headed wide from a Robbie Wyatt corner before Tom Messenger replaced Stu Hemsley in the 65th minute.

Wyatt doubled North Leigh's advantage in the 67th minute - firing in easily as the Bassett defence failed to close him down.

It was three five minutes later as Liam Hope added a deft touch to a Hamp cross after Wyatt did well to set up Hamp.

Andy Hallett was then brought on for Steve Yeardley who suffered an injury from a late two-footed lunch, which didn't yield a card.

Hamp fired wide from a free kick fifteen minutes from time before Bassett brought on Andy Youngsam for Dave Tyler, adding more firepower upfront.

'Keeper Ian Gill then stopped shots from Nick Forrester, Hope and Hamp before he was unable to stop a Wyatt shot which found the back of the net for North Leigh's fourth.

A through ball threaded through Wyatt who placed the ball into the back of the net, past the outstretched Gill.

Bassett haven't won a league game in seven games and this needs to be stopped in the upcoming games against Witney, Pegasus and Shortwood – three games Bassett should take points from.

Scoop's Man of the Match: Matty Bennett – caused trouble for the North Leigh defence, beating them often and should have had an assist if it wasn't for Dave Tyler's inaccuracy in front of goal.

Scoop Rating: 6/10 – Should have had at least a goal from the first half and began to self-destruct after the second goal went in.
