2 ‒ 1 |
Two goals inside the first four minutes sent Bassett crashing out of the Challenge Cup at the first hurdle – thus sending them into the unwanted territories of the Supplementary Cup – as Bassett lost 2-1 at Tuffley.
Marvyn Roberts gave Tuffley the lead – sending the ball into the bottom corner at the second time of asking after receiving the ball from a deep free kick.
Roberts created the second, winning the ball in a challenge with Steve Yeardley when the odds were stacked against him, then squaring the ball to Dean Coley who had his shot deflected in off of Andy Hallett leaving Chris Mills wrong-footed.
In the fifth minute, Tuffley failed to capitalize on a Rob Hopkins mistake as Peter Thomas hit wide from David Gibbs' ball.
An unmarked Roberts then headed over unmarked at the back post from Thomas' cross.
On 16 minutes, Roberts nearly caught Mills off of his line but the Tuffley forward headed over from another deep ball.
Bassett made a change just before the half hour mark as Hallett came off injured and was replaced by Richard Gee.
Moments later, Matt Bennett came close but his header from a Paul Patel set piece was deflected over.
Gee got himself booked before the break for persistent fouling after taking down Coley.
At half time, Bassett made another change when Geoff Swatton – returning from a two-month suspension – replaced Steve Bunting who had picked up a slight knock.
Lee Morse had a half chance six minutes after the restart, but Tuffley 'keeper Scott Rose saved.
Roberts received a booking for the home side three minutes later after a dangerous foul on Gee.
Both sides continued to threaten but neither were able to capitalize on mistakes by both defences before Bassett made their third and final change twenty minutes before the end – Ben Gascoyne replacing Stu Hemsley.
A diving header by Mark Patterson went wide in the 79th minute after he connected with a Danny Moore corner.
Two minutes from time, Matt Bennett played through Patel but Patel had his shot deflected over before Liam Halliday was booked for a rash challenge on Yeardley who confronted Halliday after the challenge.
Swatton grabbed a consolation goal for Bassett two minutes into injury time, curling in from fifteen yards but it wasn't enough as Bassett went out in round one.
Scoop's Man of the Match: Dave Tyler – fought well and was hard in the tackle all day, never backing out of anything.
Scoop Rating: 7/10 – A steady performance following a funny five minutes at the start of the game due to half the side looking asleep.
