Draw for Bassett against top of league Aldbourne

Wootton Bassett Reserves playing their first game in three weeks travelled away to take on league leaders, Aldbourne. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the pitch had been made superb by the Aldbourne grounds staff. During the early part of the first half both sides played good approach work but were not able to convert the chances. And the Bassett defence was put under a lot of pressure from the very lively Aldbourne front players. Midway through the first half Bassett began to take more control of the game in midfield through the tough tackling of Davies and new boy Wilkes [sic]. Bassett forced the ball into the Aldbourne penalty area, and following a scramble the ball broke loose to Serratore who scored with a well taken shot. This set Aldbourne into action and they placed the Bassett defence again under a lot of pressure, through the very quick front three of Aldbourne, and their persistency paid off with an equalising goal within minutes of Bassett taking the lead. The remainder of the first half was fairly evenly balanced until in the final minutes Davies, who had continued to stamp his mark in midfield, worked his way into the penalty area. He rounded the goalkeeper and scored, to send Bassett in at half time 2-1 in the lead.

From the start of the second half Aldbourne were making all the play and Bassett, although in the lead, were not able to put their game together and did not put much pressure at all on Aldbourne. Aldbourne's relentless pressure and determination eventually paid dividends when they drew level at 2-2 with a very well taken goal after some good play from their left. Aldbourne then went into the lead from the penalty spot after a rather crude tackle by Davies on the very quick Aldbourne forward. With Aldbourne now in the lead, they seemed content to relax a bit and Bassett became more aggressive and once again started to put pressure on Aldbourne. Following a corner, debut boy Wilkes [sic] scored with a powerful header to level the scores at 3-3 with only 10 minutes of the game remaining. Overall, not a bad display by Bassett Reserves, who have not been beaten in the league since last October.
