Midfield trio lacking awareness

Wootton Bassett Reserves met Pewsey Vale Reserves in a re-arranged league match. Bassett started the game well and were full of confidence following last week's 7-0 win over Ramsbury. While having all the play, Bassett failed to score even though the approach work was good. Both Thomas and McLeod were playing some good balls into the penalty area, but the Bassett midfield trio's lack of awareness failed to capitalise on the good service. Against the run of play and following a bad back pass from Docherty, Pewsey scored. Not for the first time this season Bassett then had an uphill battle on their hands, but eventually drew level following a good determined run by Burke, half time 1-1.

The second half saw Bassett again with all the play, but a misunderstanding between Dixon and Bryant allowed Pewsey forwards to advance on goal and score to take the lead 1-2. Yet again Bassett found themselves behind even though they had had 90 per cent of the play. Bassett continued to dominate the game and their persistency was rewarded with goals from Bell (2) and White, to turn out eventual winners 4-2. Bassett really must take command of their games at an early stage and not allow the opposition to snatch goals through either inattentive play or bad marking. Against better teams they will have great difficulty in retrieving goals. A good result for Bassett Reserves and hopefully the winning ways will continue next Saturday when the replay in the Ghia Junior Cup is finally played at home, k.o. 2pm.
