1 ‒ 2 |
Following last week's defeat in the Ghia Junior Cup against Malmesbury, Bassett Reserves introduced some new faces for the away game against Ferndale. The game got off to a hectic pace with Bassett making all the running and went close to scoring in the first four minutes. Once Ferndale settled into their game the play evened out and following an error by Gerrish in the Bassett defence, Ferndale were allowed to advance into the penalty area, and Gerrish, in an effort to make amends for his error brought down the Ferndale player and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty, which Bassett old boy Regan duly converted to put Ferndale in the lead, 1-0. The game was now more evenly balanced. Both Bassett and Ferndale playing some good football, and following some good close play by Serratore, in the Bassett half, a good ball found Thomas who scored a good goal to bring the score level at 1-1. Towards the end of the first half, Ferndale applied a lot of pressure, and looked like scoring on more than one occasion, but good defensive work by Gerrish and skipper Dixon kept the score level, It was a relief to Bassett when the referee signalled half time.
The second half was played very tight by both teams and the game was a hard fought battle in midfield, with Serratore playing particularly well for Bassett. Neither side came close to scoring until about 10 minutes from the end when, following a free kick to Bassett the ball was flicked into the Ferndale goal area. The ball was eventually played back to Serratore who drove the ball home for what was to prove the winner for Bassett. A good display by Bassett Reserves, who face all games in December away from home, and are looking for maximum points from those games to push then higher up Division 3. Good displays by Taylor, Flavell and substitute Davies, all newcomers to the Bassett side this year, and Davies in particular on his showing as substitute must surely be worth a full game.
