Road odyssey continues with heavy defeat

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies' latest fixture in their seemingly interminable run of away fixtures saw them suffer a heavy 5-0 defeat against Torquay United Women.

Bassett's hopes of taking anything from the game - and closing the gap between themselves and the Gulls in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division - we're all but extinguished before the interval as Torquay raced into a 4-0 half time lead.

While Bassett fared better after the restart, they were unable to grab a consolation with Torquay eventually rounding off the scoring.

On target for the hosts were Ellie Bishop (2), Katie Barriball, Bethany Everson and Esme Kilburn-Thompson.

Bassett's run of six straight away games to start the calendar year finally ends next week when the side travel to Middlezoy Rovers - team Graham Fletcher's side will be hoping to beat for the second time this season.

That game also serves as an opportunity to restore some confidence ahead of home fixtures with Torquay and their fellow high-flyers AFC St Austell to finish the season.

While only truly outplayed in their trip to Torquay, Bassett's road odyssey has been a trying one, yielding just three points - in a series of fixtures that has seen Bassett slip into mid-table.

The goal now will be to finish on a high - and ensure the team's first completed season at step five of the women's football pyramid ends with a top half finish.
